Fair play
The leaderboard is only fun if every time on it was really driven. These are its rules, what the server checks, and what to do if you see a run that looks wrong.
How the board works
- Each island has its own board, and each player has one row on it: their best time. Posting more runs only replaces your row when the new time is faster.
- A player is their account while signed in. Without an account, it is a random key your browser keeps. Our server only stores a hash of that key.
- Picking someone else's racing name gives you a second row with that name. It never replaces their row or their times.
- The board takes runs on the day's island, and for one more day after it. Runs on older islands and practice maps stay in your browser.
What the server checks
The game never writes to the board directly. Every run goes through one function on our server, which checks it before it counts:
- The day: only the current island, or the day before it.
- The time: between 5 seconds and 60 minutes.
- The ghost: runs up to 20 minutes must come with their recording. It must be recorded at 20 frames a second, and its number of frames must match the time to within 3 frames. A recording that is too big for its length is refused.
- The rate: at most 30 runs per player and 60 runs per network (IP address) in 10 minutes. The IP address is only stored as a hash and cleared after a day.
- The name: 1 to 20 characters, no spaces at the start or end, and no hidden or control characters.
- The car and paint: must be given in the right format.
About a minute later the server looks at the recording itself. A run is taken off the board when the car jumps somewhere it can't drive to, holds a speed no car reaches, or the recording is broken. Runs that only look odd, and new records far ahead of everyone else, are looked at by hand.
These checks stop broken and simple faked runs. They don't catch everything, so the rules below still apply, and we may remove runs that break them.
Allowed and not allowed
Welcome
- Shortcuts, risky routes and any line you can drive. Jumping a wall, crossing a river or skipping a stretch of road is part of the game.
- Wall rides, kickers, climbs and any trick the car can do.
- Racing other players' ghosts and watching their replays to learn their lines.
- Any keyboard layout, your own key bindings, any gamepad or touch screen.
Not allowed
- Modified game clients, or scripts and tools that change how the game runs.
- Faked or edited times or ghosts, or runs you did not drive yourself.
- Bots, macros and any other automated driving.
- Using a bug that breaks the game itself to post a time, for example one that lets the car pass through solid ground or walls. If you find one, please tell us.
- Getting around the rate limits or attacking the servers.
Racing names
Your racing name is shown to everyone. It must not be offensive, hateful or sexual, a real person's full name, someone else's trademark, or pretend to be another player or Hoone. Please don't use your own real name either. We may change or remove names that break these rules.
Report a run or a name
In the game, open the leaderboard. To report a player, press the flag at the end of their row and pick what is wrong: cheating, an offensive name or an offensive picture. To report one run, watch it and press the flag button at the bottom of the replay: an impossible time, cheated driving, or an offensive name or picture. When several players report the same run or player, we get a message and look at it by hand. Reports are anonymous: the player you report never sees who reported them.
For anything longer, email [email protected] with:
- the racing name, and a link to their racer page if you have one,
- the Hoone number or the date of the island,
- what looks wrong, for example a time far ahead of everyone else or a ghost that goes somewhere no car can.
You can watch any run from the results before you write. Racer pages are on the racers list.
What happens then
If a run or a name breaks these rules, we may take the run off the board, take all of a player's runs off it, change or remove the name, reset progress, or close the account behind it. Runs taken off the board are kept, so we can put them back if we got it wrong. We may also correct a board after a bug. The full rules are in the terms of service, and the FAQ and about page say more about the game.
